For Ben Ottenweller’s four senior basketball players, senior night became a night to remember. Charles Cammack, Nelson Dwire, Leander Scruggs and Matthew Wiersema earned starting places for their last home game on Tuesday night against Wayne, and they went home with a 57-55 upset victory over a foe that has defeated some of the best teams in the city.

Tickets for Saturday’s girls basketball semistate game against Turkey Run at Warsaw Community High School are now on sale in the Canterbury athletics office. Approximately 250 tickets are available for Canterbury’s assigned lower level section; anyone who does not have one of these 250 tickets will have to sit in the upper level. These 250 tickets include the student section, so all students wishing to sit there need to purchase a lower-level ticket. Lower level tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
All tickets cost $7; lower level seats are for open seating within Canterbury’s assigned sections, while upper level seats are general admission throughout that level of the gym. Please contact Mary Hess in the athletics office at 432-2226 with questions. Tickets will remain on sale until Thursday afternoon; all remaining tickets will be sold at the door on Saturday.

Cassie Kreiger made a 3-pointer less than 15 seconds into Saturday’s Caston regional, and just like that, the Lady Cavaliers were off and running on their way to two convincing victories and a third consecutive trip to semistate.

Canterbury’s girls basketball team heads to their seventh consecutive regional at Caston High School on Saturday, where they will take on Kouts at 10:30 A.M. If Canterbury wins the morning game, the regional championship will be played at 8:00 P.M. Saturday evening. The Canterbury athletics office has season tickets (good for both sessions) for Saturday’s regional on sale this week. Each season pass is $9.00. Monday’s sectional championship came a bit later than normal for Scott Kreiger and his Canterbury Lady Cavaliers, but the victory was just as sweet as each of the previous 9 have been. Canterbury knocked off Bethany Christian, 87-43, in the final of the snow-delayed Hamilton girls basketball sectional, to give the Lady Cavs their seventh consecutive sectional title and Kreiger’s 200th career win.

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers basketball team has become familiar with the role of favorite in sectional 51, but even so, each game remains unique in its importance. The same will hold true tonight, as Scott Kreiger leads the Lady Cavs into action against the Bethany Christian Bruins at 7:30 P.M. at Hamilton.
The winner of tonight’s game will be crowned sectional champion and advance to Saturday’s Caston regional, where the opponent will be the winner of tonight’s Bowman Academy sectional final between the host Eagles and #6 Kouts. Under Kreiger, Canterbury has won 6 straight, and 9 of the last 10, sectional titles. Directions to Hamilton via Google Maps can be found here.

The Canterbury Athletics Department is pleased to announce that Ms. Molly Reilly has been named the new head coach for the girls soccer team, beginning in the fall of 2010. Ms. Reilly, who played college soccer at Butler University in Indianapolis, served as the lead assistant coach during the 2009 season and assumes the head job as part of an overall expansion of her teaching role at the school. She is excited by this opportunity and looks forward to working with those new and returning players who will join the team.

The following update on after school practices comes from athletics director Ken Harkenrider:
We will proceed with offering practices after school for teams. Any parent/student who feels they would be more comfortable with a 3:20 departure may communicate that to coaches, and students should be released to leave school at that time without consequence. Further, in the interest of allowing all teams to complete practices within a reasonable time no practice should be longer than one hour in length.
ADDITION (2:55 P.M.): Cheer practice has been canceled on Wednesday

The girls basketball sectional at Hamilton has seen yet another schedule change due to school cancellations in northeast Indiana. Canterbury will now play Elkhart Christian at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, February 12. With a win, the Lady Cavs would advance to the semifinal on Saturday at approximately 7:30 P.M. The sectional final will be played on Monday at 7:30 P.M.
