Tuesday night, the Canterbury girls’ team geared up to face the ladies from New Haven High School. The varsity Cavaliers managed to pull off a victory of 72-60, but not without a struggle on both sides of the scoreboard.
Senior Tabitha Gerardot tipped the ball to the Lady Cavs at the start of the varsity game, assisting her teammates in gaining an 8 point lead over New Haven by the end of the first quarter. The score: 18-10.
The game took an unfortunate turn when the Bulldogs closed the gap and took the lead, New Haven 30 and Canterbury 26, at the end of the half. The third quarter was not much easier for the Lady Cavs, and ended at 47-45 New Haven lead.
The Cavaliers regained their balance in the final quarter, tying the Bulldogs 54-54, and, with a combination of 6 layups and 2 three pointers, brought the final score to a 72-60, home victory.
Coach Scott Kreiger was disappointed in the team’s performance in the first half. “We knew New Haven was 9 and 3, athletic, experienced, would not roll over and die,” he said after the game. “It took us two and a half quarters to start getting back on track.”
The top scorers of the night were junior Becky Pedro, 26 points; Gerardot, 18 points; and senior Cassie Kreiger, 14 points. According to Coach Kreiger there was no one player that stood out on the court. “That is the nature of the team,” he said. “It’s a well-balanced team and the girls don’t rely on anyone to carry more than their share of the load.” According to the fans, however, junior Madison Moyle’s performance both defensively and offensively was noteworthy.
As an announcement to all Cavalier fans, the annual Canterbury Hoopla will be taking place this coming Saturday, January 16, in the high school gym. Students, teachers, parents, and alumni are encouraged to support the junior varsity boys at 4:30 p.m., the varsity girls at 6:00 pm, and the varsity boys at 7:30, enjoy the free food, and support Coaches vs. Cancer. All three teams will take on Lakewood Park.
