The Canterbury Cavaliers faced a tough test on Monday in the opening game of the Blackhawk Christian baseball sectional: the only team in the sectional they had yet to play. The Cavaliers, however, were able to overcome that challenge and pull out a 5-4, 9-inning win over Bethany Christian.

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers tennis team had won 12 matches in a row coming into Saturday afternoon’s semistate championship against #5 Zionsville, but 13 proved unlucky, as the Lady Eagles knocked off Canterbury 4-1 and ended the Lady Cavs’ season.

The #14 Canterbury Lady Cavaliers continued their run through the state tennis tournament Saturday morning with a 4-1 victory over Marion in the first match of the Concordia semistate. Anna Rao (#2 singles) and Caitlin Sullivan (#3 singles) swept to 6-1, 6-1 victories, while the #1 doubles team of Courtney Scott and Caroline Wright earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Rachel Horton and Chloe Hoffacker rallied to win in 3 sets at #2 doubles, where they triumped 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Canterbury’s #1 singles player, sophomore Claire Liles, was knocked off by Marion’s Kristen Futrell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The victory means that the Lady Cavaliers will play #5 Zionsville for the chance to travel to Indianapolis for next weekend’s state finals. That match will occur Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Zollner Tennis Complex across the street from Concordia Lutheran High School. Results and pictures will be posted after the match.

This morning’s girls tennis sectional final against Homestead has been moved to Wildwood Racquet Club due to wet court conditions at Homestead. The match between the #13 Lady Cavaliers and #19 Homestead Lady Spartans will now begin at 9:45 a.m. Wildwood is located on Hadley Road just west of I-69; you can find a map of its location here. Check with the Canterbury Sports Blog later in the day for results and photos from the sectional final match.

Poor field conditions at Canterbury have caused the athletics office to CHANGE THE LOCATION OF TONIGHT’S SOFTBALL GAME to South Side’s home field at Packard Park, at the intersection of Fairfield and Packard. Senior night festivities will not take place at the game. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
The baseball game against Heritage, originally scheduled for tonight as senior night, has been canceled due to poor field conditions at Canterbury. The game will not be made up. Senior night festivities will take place at an alternate location; please contact Sharon Kacprowicz or Brian Greer for more information.

The #14 Canterbury girls tennis team heads in to sectional play tonight at Homestead riding high off a victory over #20 Penn earlier this week. The Lady Cavaliers are slated to face off with Columbia City at 4:15 p.m. in the first match. With a win tonight, Canterbury would take on Whitko Friday at the same time.
The sectional championship will take place on Saturday morning, with introductions to begin at 8:45 a.m.
Sophomore Claire Liles, the Lady Cavs’ #1 singles player, was featured in today’s Journal Gazette.

Despite sunny skies on Monday, this past weekend’s rain created poor field conditions, and the athletics department has been forced to cancel the Canterbury girls softball game at home this afternoon against Bluffton. No makeup date has been announced, but since sectionals begin at Canterbury next Monday, it is unlikely that today’s game will be made up.

Monday night’s home tennis match against Bluffton is the final one of the season for the Canterbury girls tennis team. Head coach Jerry Gerig and the team members will honor the squad’s only senior, Courtney Scott, in a pre-match ceremony. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
