The Canterbury girls swimming team will compete in the preliminaries of their sectional competition tonight at South Side High School. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Brown Natatorium, which is at South Side.

Other teams competing tonight in the South Side sectional include Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, Carroll, Concordia, Elmhurst, Homestead, Northrop, North Side, Snider, South Side and Wayne.

Fresh off a 32-point win Tuesday night at White’s, the Canterbury boys basketball team will play a home game for the first time in nearly two weeks tonight when they host the Whitko Wildcats. Senior Zach Tomlinson (14.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and freshman Nick Lewis (14.7 ppg, 2.2 spg) will lead the 5-8 Cavaliers against coach Rob Irwin’s 5-8 Wildcats. The junior varsity game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip, with the varsity game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Please note that this game is not on your published Canterbury winter sports schedule; it was originally scheduled as an away game on January 8, but due to scheduling conflicts with Whitko it is now a home game for Canterbury.

Tonight’s boys basketball game between Canterbury and White’s has been moved from White’s to Southwood High School, as a result of problems with facilities at White’s. Both games will begin at their previously scheduled times (JV 6:00 p.m., varsity 7:30 p.m.).

Southwood High School is located at 564 East State Road 124 in Wabash. You can find directions from Canterbury to Southwood through Google Maps by clicking here. Below are the directions provided by the Canterbury athletics department:

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers have yet another nominee for the News-Sentinel’s Girls Basketball Player of the Week. Aubrey Holle, who surpassed the 1,000 point mark on Thursday evening, was listed in Saturday’s paper as one of four nominees for this week’s award.

Tabitha Gerardot was a nominee last week; as of the original time of this post, the News-Sentinel had yet to update their poll page, so Gerardot is still listed as a candidate, and Holle has yet to be added.

You can vote for Tabitha or Aubrey, depending on when the News-Sentinel updates their website, by clicking here.

Fans took their places in the Canterbury gym to celebrate Lady Cavaliers seniors Aubrey Holle and Molly Kulow on Thursday night. Coaches and parents came onto the court to honor and recognize the seniors’ careers in basketball as well as their last home game.

The Canterbury High School swim team has had a great season so far. The meet Tuesday night versus Manchester at the Manchester Community Pool was no exception. All of the Canterbury swimmers swam “off events,” or events that they typically don’t swim during competition. This is a strategy to give the swimmers a rest from their competitive events before sectionals.

Senior point guard Aubrey Holle came through in the clutch, as she has done many times throughout her career at Canterbury, by making 11 of her 12 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 49-39 home victory over Harding.

The Lady Hawks jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead to open the game, but Becky Pedro scored 6 of her 10 points in the first quarter, leading the rallying Lady Cavs to a 17-14 lead at the end of that first period. Canterbury held slim, 2-point leads at both halftime and the end of the third quarter, but Holle’s marksmanship from the line helped them pull away in the final stanza.

Sophomore forwards Tabitha Gerardot and Cassie Kreiger were once again dominant inside: Kreiger tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Gerardot finished a strong all-around game with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks. Paige Wells (2 points) was the only other scorer for Canterbury.

Holle, the only senior in the Canterbury starting lineup, was the team’s second-leading scorer with 15 points. That output brings her career total to 992, only 8 points shy of the 1,000 point milestone. In a fitting coincidence, Holle will have a chance to surpass that mark at home on senior night, when Canterbury takes on Fremont on Thursday, January 24.

Fans of all ages are encouraged to attend the game and honor Holle and her fellow senior, guard Molly Kulow, for the tremendous contributions they have made to the continued excellence of the Lady Cavaliers basketball program. The junior varsity game on Thursday is scheduled to tip at 6:00 p.m. The senior night celebration will occur in between the junior varsity and varsity contests, with the varsity game projected to start at 7:30 p.m.

Canterbury started off the game Saturday with two quick baskets to take a 4-0 lead that they would never relinquish. The defensive effort was apparent as the Cavaliers were diving on the floor for every loose ball. Junior Reed Haines made his presence felt in the game when he entered the game in the 2^nd quarter and immediately dove into the student section for the ball.

Churubusco pulled within two scores with under three minutes left in the 2^nd quarter when the Cavs’ defense pulled through again by forcing a 5 second violation on a Churubusco inbound attempt. Canterbury took advantage of this momentum turner and added to their lead to make it 27-21 at half.

The momentum continued into the third quarter as the Cavs opened the 2^nd half with two three pointers to extend the lead to double digits. While Churubusco never had the lead, they kept the game close and would not quit. They pulled within 4 as the third quarter was ending, but Canterbury scored five unanswered points including senior Zach Tomlinson’s three at the buzzer to extend the lead to 41-32.

Canterbury took over the game at the start of the 4^th quarter. The Cavs scored 16 points in the quarter while keeping Churubusco to only 9. This left the final tally to be Canterbury 57 and Churubusco 41.

Senior Zach Tomlinson led the team with 21 points, followed by Junior Andy Ottenweller’s 13, while the freshman trio of Nick Lewis, Jason Williams, and Marquel Cooper chipped in 10, 12, and 1 point respectively. Every player who dressed saw time on the court as Coach Ben Ottenweller showed off the team’s depth.

The junior varsity game came right down to the end, but Canterbury was able to pull it out and win a close game 39-37.

The boys are off until Thursday, when they travel to Elmhurst to take on the Trojans.
