The Canterbury boys basketball team will travel to Northfield High School to take on the Norse on Friday night. The junior varsity game will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the varsity game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Cavaliers freshman basketball team has added another contest to their growing schedule. Canterbury will take on local rival Homestead on Monday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. at home.

The Class 4A #14 South Side Archers got off to a quick start against Class A #4 Canterbury Wednesday night. South Side had a fourteen-point lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched it into a 74-42 victory as Canterbury struggled to chip away at the lead.
The Lady Cavaliers were extremely efficient at breaking South Side’s full court press, but struggled to finish their shots and put points on the board during their fast break opportunities. South Side was proficient and balanced on the offensive side of the ball, with ten players scoring and four in double digits. The half court offense was not in sync for the Lady Cavs either, as they had the ball stolen from them 21 times.
Sophomore Tabitha Gerardot had a stellar game and led Canterbury in rebounds with 15; she also led all scorers with 18 points. Starters Aubrey Holle, Becky Pedro, and Cassie Krieger combined for 20 points and Kelly Karr rounded the starting line up. Molly Kulow and Paige Wells saw playing time in both halves and both Wells and Nakao Mauch had two points in the second half.
Molly Sekar and Jordan Fisher combined for 12 of the junior varsity Lady Cavs’ 20 points in a losing effort.
Canterbury will return to action on Monday, December 3 against Woodlan at home. The Lady Cavs will seek to break their two-game losing streak in a game that was rescheduled from its original date on November 14. The junior varsity game will start at 6:00 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.

For the Canterbury Cavaliers’ swim team, this season seems like it will be a time for reconstruction. Despite the individual nature of competitive swimming, “teamwork,” states Abby Hall, will be the name of the game in 2007-2008 for the Cavaliers as they try to improve on last season’s mixed results. After losing key swimmers and divers last year due to graduation, fresh new faces are stepping up to the platform to fill in the vacant spots. Despite these losses, the Cavaliers return a strong veteran cast seeking to compete this season. In particular, they will look to senior Abby Hall and sophomore Madeline Burns for leadership support. The swim has more seniors than expected, as seniors Kevin Argus, Chris Danby, and Ali Rifkin are amongst the newcomers to the swim team. The upperclassmen who joined this year joined for fun, or as one senior stated, “to try a new sport.”
Swimming for fun, however, doesn’t seem to be the case with the underclassmen. The team will be joined by some promising new freshman. Senior Chris Danby stated that the key swimmers for the boys would be the under-classmen; senior Abby Hall said the same would be true on the girls’ side and added, “Most of the freshman have been swimming for a couple years, some even swim all year round.”
With a crop of promising newcomers and a couple of veterans returning to fill key leadership roles and build on last year’s personal bests, the 2007-2008 season will be an opportunity for the Cavs to rebuild and bond as a team, and prove that team effort can be a successful strategy for achieving success in the pool.

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers freshman basketball team has added a game to their schedule. New Haven will travel to Canterbury on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, for a 5:00 p.m. game. Be sure to add this new contest to your Canterbury athletics schedules!

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers swim team will open their 2007-08 season tonight at Brown Natatorium. Canterbury will take on Snider, with the meet set to begin at 3:15 p.m.

The Canterbury Lady Cavaliers basketball team stormed ahead to begin their game against the Southwood Lady Knights Monday night, with 11 unanswered points to end the first quarter; however, Southwood marched back in the fourth to win the game with a final counter attack lay-up with four seconds left.
Starters Aubrey Holle and Cassie Kreiger accounted for 16 points each, leading the Lady Cavaliers, while Tabitha Gerardot also made it into double digits with 10 points. Molly Kulow and Becky Pedro rounded out the starting lineup, and Paige Wells and Kelly Karr both saw playing time in each half. Southwood’s Hannah Lengel led all scorers with 23 points and fellow Lady Knight Sarah Lowther had 16 points.
The Lady Cavs were out of sync coming out of the third quarter as they maintained their early lead, which had hovered around 10 points since the end of the first. It was slowly whittled down, however, in the fourth as a series of small mis-communications and unlucky shots brought the game to a tie with 3 minutes left.
Canterbury head coach Scott Kreiger could be heard from across the court as he yelled to his team, “Wait for the last shot!†An entire minute passed before there was any movement on either side, but after some quick passing and an unlucky bobble, the Cavs lost the ball and were forced to fight to get it back, committing a costly foul that put Southwood in the bonus.
After Southwood made both free throws, leaving thirty seconds on the clock, the Cavs took the ball down and answered with a short jumper, tying the game, as fans erupted throughout the stands. This, however, was quickly quieted by a fast break lay up by the Knights with only 4 seconds left on the clock. After a half court shot which landed just short of the hoop, the buzzer sounded, and the Canterbury Lady Cavs were dealt their first loss of the season.
The team will not be able to dwell on this loss; they look ahead to their next game against

The Canterbury Cavaliers boys basketball team tipped off their season Tuesday night at home against the Central Noble Cougars with a bang. The Cavs, led by senior Zach Tomlinson with 15 points, bested the Cougars 66-52.
Canterbury came out in the first quarter looking sharp, as they jumped out to an early 11-2 lead. From there the Cavs never looked back, and were able to maintain at least a 9 point lead throughout the game. At halftime it looked to be a rout, with the Cavaliers leading 37-23, with contributions from each of the starters and many from the bench. The Canterbury starting five was made up of Nick Lewis, Andy Ottenweller, Zach Tomlinson, Eric Wertenberger and Patrick Yurkanin. Major contributors from the bench included freshmen Marquel Cooper and Jason Williams, and sophomore Matthew Wiersema.
Although the night ended well for the Cavs, they struggled with fouls and turnovers. There were three players with at least three fouls, and the number of turnovers was in excess of what head coach Ben Ottenweller likely expects from his varsity squad.
In the junior varsity contest between the two schools, Canterbury was able to pull off a victory quite handily, winning by a final score of 38-21.
The boys basketball team will take the court next at Hamilton on Tuesday, November 27. The junior varsity game is slated for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off; the varsity game will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. The boys freshman team will play their first game of the season at Bluffton High School on Monday, November 26 at 6:30 p.m.
