It figured that the beginning of the boys soccer season would be tough going for Greg Mauch’s Canterbury Cavaliers. Having lost 7 senior starters, including 4 Division I players, from last year’s roster, Mauch is rebuilding his squad from the ground up. The new-look Cavaliers gained experience on Friday night against a quality opponent, but dropped a 5-0 decision against a more experienced and more composed #3 North Central team at IPFW as part of the National Soccer Festival. Senior midfielder Tyler Huber was Canterbury’s most dangerous player on Friday, as he tested the Panther defense on multiple occasions, but was unable to find the back of the net. Canterbury will return to action on Saturday night, when they make up the contest against Bishop Luers that was postponed on Thursday. The JV game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m., with varsity to follow. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee-sponsored tailgate, with free food and drinks for all current Canterbury high school students, will begin around 7:15 p.m.

The regional round of the boys soccer state tournament at Carroll High School has proven to be a difficult hurdle for Canterbury over the past two years.
