In what was an outstanding display of tennis all around, Jerry Gerig’s boys tennis team wasn’t quite able to pull out a victory over No. 13 Homestead on a chilly Friday afternoon at Homestead High School. Freshman Patrick Downs was the last to leave the court; after losing the first set, he pushed Connor Andrews to a third set tiebreak before dropping it, 10-8. On Thursday, the boys’ tennis team struggled to get their 5-0 win over Columbia City High School in the semi-finals of sectionals. While the three singles players were able to win in straight sets, the two doubles teams both split sets.

On Wednesday, the boys tennis team geared up for a match against one of the better teams in the area, East Noble. Both doubles teams made it look easy though. Alex Greene was very happy with his and David Hurley’s performance; they proved themselves by winning their match 6-1, 6-1. They had a very solid match and went out onto the court with a mission.

Mitchell Stein’s outstanding senior season for the boys tennis team continued Tuesday afternoon as he won his match in the individual portion of the state tournament sectional round at Carroll High School. Stein knocked off South Side’s Nicholas Batuello 6-1, 6-0 in a dominant performance that lasted less than an hour. The win means that Stein will play again Wednesday afternoon at Carroll at 4:00 p.m., weather permitting.
